4. Concentration and Separation
The crushed ore is then subjected to froth flotation or dense media separation to concentrate the lithium minerals. Froth flotation uses chemicals to selectively separate lithium-bearing particles from gangue materials. The resulting concentrate typically contains 5-7% lithium oxide (Li₂O).
5. Roasting and Leaching
For spodumene concentrates, a high-temperature roasting process converts the mineral into a more soluble form. The roasted material is then leached with sulfuric acid to dissolve lithium, followed by purification steps to remove impurities like iron and aluminum.
6. Brine Processing (Alternative Method)
In lithium brine operations, salt-rich groundwater is pumped into evaporation ponds. Over several months, sunlight and wind concentrate the brine by removing water. The concentrated solution is then treated with chemicals to precipitate lithium carbonate or hydroxide.
7. Refining and Final Product Production
The purified lithium solution undergoes further processing to produce battery-grade lithium compounds like lithium carbonate or hydroxide. These products are then shipped to manufacturers for use in batteries, ceramics, and other applications.
Environmental considerations are critical throughout the process, with measures in place to minimize water usage, land disturbance, and chemical emissions. Recycling initiatives are also gaining importance as demand for lithium grows sustainably.
