Processing Dolomitic Limestone: Methods and Applications

Dolomitic limestone, a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO₃)₂), is widely used in agriculture, construction, and industrial applications. 1. Mining and Extraction

2. Crushing and Screening
Crushing reduces large chunks of dolomitic limestone into smaller, manageable pieces. Primary crushers, such as jaw crushers or gyratory crushers, break down the rock into coarse fragments. Secondary crushing further refines the material using cone or impact crushers. 3. Calcination (Thermal Treatment)
For certain applications, dolomitic limestone undergoes calcination—a heating process that decomposes the carbonate minerals into oxides. In rotary kilns or vertical shaft furnaces, the material is heated to temperatures between 900°C and 1,200°C. This produces dolime (a mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide), which is essential for steelmaking, water treatment, and refractory materials.

4. Grinding and Milling
To produce fine powders for agricultural or industrial use, processed limestone is ground in ball mills or roller mills. The fineness of the powder determines its suitability for specific applications—coarser grades are used in construction aggregates, while finer powders are ideal for soil amendments or chemical manufacturing.
